SWIM SAFETY PLAN
The safety of athletes is the highest priority of the organizing committee. A comprehensive multi-layered water safety system will be deployed across the swim course.
Safety personnel will remain in continuous communication with the Race Director and Medical Team.
WATER SAFETY TEAM
SCUBA Safety Unit
Two SCUBA divers will be present to provide underwater monitoring and rapid response if a swimmer submerges or requires underwater assistance.
Lifeguards
A team of four or more trained lifeguards will be stationed along the swim course to monitor swimmers and respond immediately to any distress signals.
COURSE SAFETY DEPLOYMENT
Safety personnel will be positioned strategically around the swim course to ensure complete visual coverage.
Deployment includes:
• Lifeguards positioned near turn buoys and mid-course
• Kayaks monitoring the outer swim boundary
• Water scooters patrolling the course perimeter
• Motor boat and rubber boat on standby for rescue or evacuation
• SCUBA divers positioned in deeper areas of the lake
This layered system ensures multiple responders can reach any athlete quickly.
MEDICAL SUPPORT
A First Aid and Medical Station will be located at the swim exit/finish area.
Medical personnel will be available to treat:
• exhaustion and dehydration
• hypothermia
• water aspiration
• minor injuries
• other medical emergencies
Athletes requiring further treatment will be transported to a designated medical facility if necessary.
DISTRESS SIGNALS AND ASSISTANCE
If an athlete requires assistance during the swim:
1. Raise one arm above the water to signal distress.
2. The nearest lifeguard, kayak, or rescue unit will respond immediately.
3. Athletes may hold onto a buoy, kayak, or rescue craft to rest.
4. Athletes unable to continue safely will be removed from the course and recorded as DNF.
OPEN WATER SWIM PREPARATION TIPS
Open water swimming differs significantly from pool swimming. Athletes should arrive on race day healthy, trained, and prepared.
Key recommendations:
• Train in open water conditions before race day
• Avoid racing with new or untested equipment
• Warm up on land before the race
• Study the swim course layout and buoy positions
• Start the swim at a controlled pace
• Signal for help immediately if experiencing distress
Athletes are strongly encouraged to consult their physician before competing, following screening recommendations from organizations such as the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology.
