Margalla Triathlon Swim

Margalla Triathlon

Swim Venue: Gulberg Greens Lake – Islamabad

The swim segment will take place in the calm open waters of Gulberg Greens Lake. The course has been designed to provide a safe, clearly marked, and spectator-friendly environment for all participants.

SWIM COURSE

The swim course consists of a 750 m loop swum in an anti-clockwise direction.

            •           Sprint Distance: 1 lap (750 m)

            •           Olympic Distance: 2 laps (1500 m)

Athletes will swim straight out from the start line, follow the buoy-marked course making two left turns, and then head back toward the swim exit and transition area.

            •           Sprint athletes will exit the water after completing one lap and proceed to Transition 1 (T1).

            •           Olympic distance athletes will complete two laps before exiting the water.

The swim exit leads directly to the transition area.

SWIM START

The swim will begin in waves of five athletes, with each wave starting one minute apart.

Athletes will be self-seeded according to their estimated swim time.

Before the race start, athletes will line up according to the swim time signage boards. Volunteers will assist athletes in positioning themselves correctly.

At 0500 hrs , athletes will begin entering the water in a controlled and continuous flow through the designated access point.

Important:

There will be no warm-up swimming allowed in the lake prior to the race start. Athletes should complete their warm-up exercises in the designated assembly area.

SWIM CAP

Each athlete must wear the official swim cap provided in the race pack.

            •           If two caps are worn, the official race cap must be worn on the outside.

            •           Athletes will be given a swim cap colour corresponding to their estimated swim time.

            •           Wearing the assigned cap is mandatory.

Athletes are requested to honestly estimate their swim time to ensure safe spacing between swimmers.

Athlete Number

Athlete number will be written on the athelet’s forearm with a water resistant marker and on the swim cap.

            •           Race officials and medical staff may remove athletes from the course if medically necessary.

SWIM SAFETY PLAN

The safety of athletes is the highest priority of the organizing committee. A comprehensive multi-layered water safety system will be deployed across the swim course.

Safety personnel will remain in continuous communication with the Race Director and Medical Team.

WATER SAFETY TEAM

SCUBA Safety Unit

Two SCUBA divers will be present to provide underwater monitoring and rapid response if a swimmer submerges or requires underwater assistance.

Lifeguards

A team of four or more trained lifeguards will be stationed along the swim course to monitor swimmers and respond immediately to any distress signals.

COURSE SAFETY DEPLOYMENT

Safety personnel will be positioned strategically around the swim course to ensure complete visual coverage.

Deployment includes:

            •           Lifeguards positioned near turn buoys and mid-course

            •           Kayaks monitoring the outer swim boundary

            •           Water scooters patrolling the course perimeter

            •           Motor boat and rubber boat on standby for rescue or evacuation

            •           SCUBA divers positioned in deeper areas of the lake

This layered system ensures multiple responders can reach any athlete quickly.

MEDICAL SUPPORT

A First Aid and Medical Station will be located at the swim exit/finish area.

Medical personnel will be available to treat:

            •           exhaustion and dehydration

            •           hypothermia

            •           minor injuries

            •           other medical emergencies

Athletes requiring further treatment will be transported to a designated medical facility if necessary.

DISTRESS SIGNALS AND ASSISTANCE

If an athlete requires assistance during the swim:

            1.         Raise one arm above the water to signal distress.

            2.         The nearest lifeguard, kayak, or rescue unit will respond immediately.

            3.         Athletes may hold onto a buoy, kayak, or rescue craft to rest.

            4.         Athletes unable to continue safely will be removed from the course and recorded as DNF.

OPEN WATER SWIM PREPARATION TIPS

Open water swimming differs significantly from pool swimming. Athletes should arrive on race day healthy, trained, and prepared.

Key recommendations:

            •           Train in open water conditions before race day

            •           Avoid racing with new or untested equipment

            •           Warm up on land before the race

            •           Study the swim course layout and buoy positions

            •           Start the swim at a controlled pace

            •           Signal for help immediately if experiencing distress

Athletes are strongly encouraged to consult their physician before competing, following screening recommendations from organizations such as the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology.
